There has been a lot of criticism from overseas and within India after a video on Whatsapp went viral that stated that a 16 year old Dalit girl was brutally thrashed for drinking water from a well owned by a upper caste Hindu. Eventually the video turned out to be fake. #DalitLivesMatter was trending on Twitter lately due to some unfortunate and shameful acts on the Dalits but people ignore the original grievance in the matter and make the movement a hub of fake news.
Several Tweets on this matter turns out to be fake, let’s take a look at some of those –
After several research on this fake trending video, we found out that the video is from Gujarat’s Chhota Udepur district in India. It is true that the minor girl was beaten, but she was beaten by her own community members. The reason that came out was she had eloped with a man a few days ago and three man were seen beating her in her father’s presence.
As confirmed by Sonbhadra Police on a Facebook Video, a case has been registered against 3 men who were seen beating her and 13 others who featured in the video. She was tortured, beaten by a stick, man-handled and punched on her face and back.
Soon after the video got viral, a team of police reached the village, lodged an FIR against the men after listening to all the complaints from the girl. She told that she was beaten by the people in her community, thinking her acts would bring the community’s moral values down.
All the 16 men have been booked under various sections the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for criminal intimidation, charges on rioting, assault, the police said.
It is very is shocking and sad. First, the fake news and then a minor girl beaten till she collapsed. It is very sad to see that some people from the Dalit Community are fighting so hard for their rights, even losing lives. But on the other hand, people are beating up their own community members for the sake of moral values.
